You wont need externals in a Berlin system unless yu want them to hold things like Rowaphos or some extra LR .
I go with a sump every time i even run my Discus tank with a sump .
handy place to put put additives if you wish and to top up either on auto top up or manualy hide equipment like heaters and skimmers .Plus you increase the amont of fish you can have by increaseing the amount of water in the system.

do you have to drill a hole in the bottem of ur tank to add a sump.
Not necesarily, it is the favoured method, but if like me, you're scared sh!tless about drilling a tank, you can use an overflow, which basically is an upside down "U" shaped box which hangs on the tank. It has weir, and a syphon tube inside, which takes water from the tank and transfers it to the outer part of the box which then drains down to the sump. There are several on the market, Schurran (spelling?) do one, and I have a Tunze Weirbox, to name but two. I have no experience of the Schurran, but I'm quite pleased with the Tunze, after I modified it slightly to cut down the noise. HTH.
